Heat pump outdoor unit installed at a home in Surrey

Heat pumps for homes and businesses

A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it indoors, giving you several units of heat for every unit of electricity. We install air to air heat pumps — the kind that heat a room in winter and cool it in summer — for homes and businesses across Surrey, Berkshire and London. This page explains the types, which suits you, and where to go next.

Two kinds of heat pump — and which we fit

An air to air heat pump warms the air in a room directly. It is the same equipment as a modern air conditioning system: an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. It heats in winter, cools in summer, and each room controls its own temperature. This is what we install. [LINK TO /air-to-air-heat-pumps ONCE THAT PAGE IS PUBLIC]

An air to water heat pump heats water for radiators, underfloor heating and hot water. It replaces a boiler. [HARRY TO CONFIRM: does HT Cooling install air to water heat pumps? If yes, link to /services/air-source-heat-pump here. If no, say "We do not install air to water systems, and we will tell you if that is what your home needs."]

Our air source heat pump page has more on the equipment itself.

    Who a heat pump suits

A room or floor that is hard to keep comfortable — a loft conversion, a home office, a garden room, a conservatory. A home with no gas, or with electric heating that costs too much to run. A new build or a renovation where the pipework and wiring can be planned in from the start. Offices and shops that need heating and cooling from one system.

    Does it work in winter?

Yes. A modern unit keeps heating well below freezing. Efficiency dips a little on the coldest days because there is less heat in the air to collect, but it keeps running. We will show you the seasonal efficiency figure for the exact model we quote, not a brochure average. [LINK TO /air-conditioning-heating-winter ONCE THAT PAGE IS PUBLIC]

    Grants

The government has announced a £2,500 grant for air to air heat pumps from 2027. It cannot be claimed yet. When the scheme opens we will say plainly who qualifies and how to apply. [LINK TO /air-to-air-heat-pump-grant ONCE THAT PAGE IS PUBLIC]

    What it costs

It depends on the number of rooms, the pipe runs and the electrics. We quote after a free survey. [PRICE RANGE — Harry to confirm before publishing, or leave this line out]

    Questions people ask

Air to air warms the air in the room directly and also cools in summer. Air to water heats radiators and hot water and replaces a boiler. They are different products. We install air to air.

For a room that is hard to heat, a home without gas, or a home with expensive electric heating, usually yes — you get heating and cooling from one system and it costs less to run than direct electric heating. We will tell you honestly if it is not the right answer for your home.

Air to air heat pumps contain refrigerant, so by law the installer must be F-Gas registered. That is a specialist qualification. All of our engineers hold it — certificate number 2004080.
